Screencast on Umbraco v4 Masterpages

Author
Warren Buckley

Hello all I thought I would do a screencast on the new ASP.NET masterpages integration in the upcoming version of Umbraco, a free .NET opensource CMS.

These videos come about when the great guys and girls from Xeed who I work for asked me to document Umbraco for internal documentation. Instead of doing the normal boring written documentation approach I thought I would try my hand at doing a screencast to cover the same information instead.

So Xeed has let me release these videos to the Umbraco community as well as they will be useful to people new to Umbraco V4. Xeed As based in Oslo, Norway where I work with along with core team member Kenneth Solberg has recently become a company who specialises in Umbraco solutions as we now have 4 umbraco certifications within the company which makes us an official Certified Solution Provider for Umbraco.

These four certified people are as follows:
Warren Buckley/Me - Level 1 Umbraco Developer
Ståle Engen - Level 1 Umbraco Developer
Kennth Solberg - Level 2 Umbraco Developer
Christian Melbye - Level 2 Umbraco Devleoper

So thanks again to the guys and girls over at Xeed to let me release these videos with you all and finally I have never done a screencast before, so please go easy on me with your feedback please ;)

Warren

great vids. they are very helpful. just one question. it seems that the installation i'm using doesn't have neat little button for the child templates. can you post the skeleton/template for this code?

After talking to Warren, and running through the demo once more I couldn't replicate my issue. My best guess is that I didn't save the child template before trying to associate it to the master template. One thing that I did notice that I didn't see in the video is that on the child template the Master directive is maintained.

Thanks Warren Awesome Work.. but i think due to the new version 4.0.1, some of the videos may be outdated.....

I was going through your video 2 which explains Master pages and child templates, i was unable to get that working in my version of Umbraco which is 4.0.1, are there any differences in this and the version specified in the videos? Any suggestions of what could be cahnged to get it working?

My version of Umbraco has the below tag
when creating the Master Template, but yours did not have this

<%@ Master Language="C#" MasterPageFile="/umbraco/masterpages/default.master" AutoEventWireup="true" %>

Also there is no master page container button when modifying the homepage template

Also when i vi
ew the page in the browser after following all the steps, i get a Server Error as below

----------------------------------------------
Cannot find ContentPlaceHolder 'MasterPlaceHolder' in the master page '/masterpages/Master.master', verify content control's ContentPlaceHolderID attribute in the content page.

Hello Hitesh,
These videos were created before the final release of Umbraco V4. If I remember this was using a BETA version of Umbraco.

Yes in the beta version it removed this from the template view so dont panic about the <% master page stuff line now being added.

I see you have emailed me and will reply to that for more details.

Warren :)

You see from this again that an organism must have a comparatively gross structure in order to enjoy the benefit of fairly accurate laws, both for its internal life and for its, interplay with the external world. ,
